Erich Maria Remarque
Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German novelist best known for All Quiet on the Western Front (1929), a powerful portrayal of World War I’s brutality. Born in Osnabrück, Germany, and drafted at 18, his wartime experiences deeply influenced his writing. The novel's success was followed by persecution under the Nazi regime, leading Remarque to exile in Switzerland and later the United States, where he became a citizen in 1947. His other major works include The Road Back and Arch of Triumph. Remarque spent his later years in Switzerland with his wife, actress Paulette Goddard, and died in 1970. |
